Social media isn't just the massive sites that are discussed endlessly--Twitter and Facebook and LinkedIn. In some industries, powerful industry-specific sites--known as industry verticals--are being created to help industry players connect with each other and with customers. An example is LocalDirt.com, a new portal that connects farmers with customers nearby. The site debuted at the Fall 2009 DEMO technology conference in San Diego last week, pitching its concept to conference producers along with 70 other tech firms. Local Dirt won a DEMOgod award, given out at the event to exceptional companies, and was also picked by innovation and venture-capital newsmag VentureBeat as one of the 10 best companies at DEMO.
Local Dirt enables small farmers to receive Web-based orders from buying groups and individuals, which are then delivered to farmer's markets for customer pickup. Larger farms can indicate where their food is sold so customers can find them in local stores, or can ask their local shop to stock their favorites. The site is free for buyers, while distributors and big sellers pay several hundred dollars a year to participate.
The site basically makes shopping for local food easy. It's hard to imagine it won't lead to increased business for farms marketing local produce as word spreads among locavores about the site.
What is your business sector doing to make it easier for you to connect with customers? If there isn't a good vertical for your industry, maybe it's time to call your association. Or organize a vertical on your own.
This sort of thing is known as co-opetition--competitors co-operating to bring more business to all, while remaining competitors. In times like these, similar businesses have a lot to gain by pulling together to find customers.

How to Save Money and Draw a Crowd
Posted By: Carol Tice on September 28, 2009 at 11:02 pm
Feeling shorthanded these days? Wondering if your business is truly meeting your customers' needs? If you answered yes to either of those questions, have you asked all your customers to help you?Increasingly, companies big and small are doing just that. It's called crowdsourcing--enlisting the help of a large group of people to do company work or shape the company agenda, rather than delegating tasks to an employee or two, or perhaps an ad agency.
The growth of social media has enabled crowdsourcing, making it easy for companies to connect with huge mobs of customers. A couple of the key benefits: saving money and making customers feel more connected to your company.
A great recent example of crowdsourcing came during the Super Bowl earlier this year, when Doritosannounced a consumer video contest to create its Super Bowl ads. More than 2,000 applicants made their own proposed 30-second ad spots for Doritos and aired them online. Doritos gave out $5 million in prize money--likely not more than they would have spent having an agency design the campaign.
And do you think any of those customers will ever forget how much fun they had entering the contest?
Netflix has used crowdsourcing to engage the tech-geek crowd (possibly they stay home a lot and rent many movies?). This month they wrapped a contest to design better movie-recommendation technology for them, with a $1 million prize.
Wins for Netflix? More engaged customers, and better movie recommendations for all its customers, without the expense of putting their own dedicated team on the task of improving their software. The company immediately announced another $1 million contest to improve on the company's "taste profile" software.
Crowdsourcing can be as simple as Dell's IdeaStorm website, where customers can leave suggestions for new products or services they'd like to see. Rather than just a few engineers sitting around in a conference room, now they're tapping their entire customer base's brainpower.
Some entrepreneurs are even building small businesses entirely from crowdsourcing. As a reporter, my favorite example has to be Peter Shankman's Help A Reporter Out, an online service that allows experts and PR people to see a daily feed of sources journalists are seeking. Through HARO, reporters can essentially ask a global crowd to answer their questions. All I can say is--it's beautiful. Experts get the press they want, and reporters get the best available source for their story.
It's free so far, but I've got to believe that at some point, he'll start charging PR people a few dollars a month for these valuable reporter leads--and he'll be rich. For now, he's hooked a huge audience on using his service, and who knows how many ways he might leverage that in the future.
Are you using crowdsourcing in your business? If so leave a comment and let us know about it. If not, consider whether there isn't a way for your business to benefit from crowd power.

Wednesday Web Resources: SBA on YouTube, Bizmore, and E-mail on Acid
Posted By: Carol Tice on September 23, 2009 at 1:28 pm
New resources keep popping up on this wonderful internet of ours, and occasionally, I'm going to take the time on my Wednesday blog posts to share some. This week, I've got three great resources for business owners--two will help you learn how to be successful, and one's about improving your e-mail communications.
First off, the Small Business Administration has hit YouTube with a series of helpful videos. Their Delivering Success series covers all the business basics, including financing, marketing, hiring, and planning. There's also videos on doing a "business reality check," as well as top success tips. If you've been wanting some basic business advice, you're out of excuses--here's some help that's free and as easy as watching TV.
If you have followup questions after you view the SBA videos, you may be able to get them answered at Bizmore--a new portal where business owners can connect to get advice straight from the entrepreneurs' mouths. The site was founded by the global CEO membership organization Vistage International, and founding Business 2.0 editor Jeffrey Davis is serving as editor-in-chief.
Finally...want to make your emails look better to your clients? There's an app for that now, and it's called Email on Acid. Launched in July and still in Beta, this "virtual e-mail simulation and testing" program allows you to view how your email will appear in various e-mail programs and on common types of mobile devices. You can see a five-minute demo of how the EonA "Acid Test" works on the site.
So far the beta version is free, so if you're curious if your graphics really appear to recipients or if they're just seeing those evil little blue boxes with question marks inside them, now's the time to check it out.
I'd tell you all about who's behind EonA, but there's no "About Us" page on their site, and no contact phone or e-mail either, just one of those evil fill-in contact forms that no one ever seems to read. This is Web site 101 stuff, people! LinkedIn indicates they're based in Denver, and Michelle Thies of Liquamedia in Scottsdale is a cofounder...and that's all I've got. But the app sounds useful anyway.

The Power of Social Networking: It’s More Than Just Business
Posted By: Mike on July 27, 2009 at 11:12 amOn July 26th, AT&T began to block access to parts of the popular 4chan.org image board, a site that claims to be the creator of such popular internet memes as Rick Rolling and LOLcats. Apparently, AT&T chose to block certain boards on the site, the predominant one being their popular /b/ image board.
First, let me throw in this disclaimer: I am not a member of that community, nor have I ever been on that site until I heard about this. It is NOT a site I will visit in the future either and if you are prudish or squeamish, I would advise you to NOT visit that site either. LOL. Some call 4chan the defender of internet free speech, others call it the worst cesspool on the internet. (I reserve my judgment, but for those of you who know me, I’m sure you know where I stand.)
The fact that this happened is really not important to me just because AT&T appeared to be censoring 4chan. What is important is the fact that apparently AT&T took it upon themselves to censor a website. Period.
What happened next can only be described as a whirlwind of support for the site. Articles popped up on reddit, digg, CentralGadget, and TechCrunch as sites and forums discussed retaliation and protest. Talks of this being the first shot fired in the war for Internet freedom arose. If the self-proclaimed ‘Mos Eisley of the internet’ could be taken down at will due to its sometimes unsavory material and user base, what would this mean for other sites in the long run?
Did we loose our freedom of speech and expression somewhere?
With its control over around 15% of the United States’ internet connection, it was feared that AT&T could suddenly start banning sites it found unsavory without retaliation, effectively censoring service for their customers.
As the day wore on cries of censorship rang out throughout the internet as AT&T refused to disclose the reason behind the blockage. There was much discussion of Net Neutrality and how these could be the first shots fired in the war for internet freedom. If a huge ISP suddenly decided that it could take away sites without reason, what was to stop them from blocking out competitors or even racketeering small entrepreneurs into paying them to allow their user base to see their sites? This was just ‘ not cool’ and the internet community saw that.
Thousands of calls and emails were made to customer service inquiring the ban and many users threatened to change service if the ban was not lifted immediately. Information began to spread and ideas flowed freely between people who were ready to fight against what they saw as an infraction against their freedoms and the momentum escalated until AT&T lifted the ban on the site and also made a press release concerning why they took action against the site:
“Beginning Friday, an AT&T customer was impacted by a denial-of-service attack stemming from IP addresses connected to img.4chan.org. To prevent this attack from disrupting service for the impacted AT&T customer, and to prevent the attack from spreading to impact our other customers, AT&T temporarily blocked access to the IP addresses in question for our customers. This action was in no way related to the content at img.4chan.org; our focus was on protecting our customers from malicious traffic.
Overnight Sunday, after we determined the denial-of-service threat no longer existed, AT&T removed the block on the IP addresses in question. We will continue to monitor for denial-of-service activity and any malicious traffic to protect our customers.”
Look, whether you believe this was the ‘reason’ or not the fact remains that hundreds of thousands of internet users rallied to the cause of protection against what they perceived as censorship thanks to social media being utilized effectively. Articles and blog posts popped up and spread like wildfire thanks to reddit and dig, youtube videos and twitter posts, and sites like TechCrunch, PC World, and CentralGadget reporting in. In one day, the message had spread so far and so fast that it appeared that AT&T had no choice but to address the situation. That is a huge example of the power of social networking. Can you imagine what it can do for your business, too?
Here’s another example of the power behind this ‘social media’ craze:
The power of social networking also has the power to allow the underdog to come out on top. After months of being passed around to different customer service representatives who all passed the buck to other parties, Dave Carroll had enough. What started off as a frustrating experience with United Airlines was channeled into a creative protest online in the form of a music video that debuted on July 6th on YouTube: United Breaks Guitars. Within days, the video was being applauded by many in the internet community and linked to within social networking sites. Within a week it had over 1,500,000 views.
With press like that, United Airlines could no longer afford to ignore the situation and finally began to pay attention to Dave’s complaints and offer compensation after the video was only up for about 4 days.
The thing is, before all of this success, Dave Carroll wasn’t anyone particularly famous. He wasn’t some big country star like Toby Keith and he is not as attractive as Carrie Underwood, either; he was just a small act touring the country. His band has notoriety, but they’re not an iconic act. It’s not like he had a legion of fans ready to help spread the word. The video is pretty much a grassroots effort to tell his story that spread like wildfire when social networking sites got a hold of it. Imagine if you could somehow harness that power for use in your business too?

New York City’s local NBC station decided it wanted to get in on the Twitter action, so they called me in as their ‘Twitter expert’ to help explain the Twitter phenomenon to the general populace. Check out how I did in this clip:

Why You Must Find Out About Product Launches Early!
Posted By: Admin on September 7, 2009 at 4:05 pmWhy You Must Find Out About Product Launches Early!
Copyright 2009 by Willie Crawford
If you are an affiliate marketer, one secret to making
more sales is finding out about product launches early.
This is true even if you are new to affiliate marketing
and have a very tiny list.
The reason that this is true is that when you find out
about a product launch early, you can position yourself
to take advantage of organic search engine traffic during
the product launch. There are dozens of things that you
can do so that you will rank near the top of the search
engines for very important product-related keywords when
you find out about a product launch early.
You can set up pages on dozens of web 2.0 type properties
such as Blogger.com, Hubpages, Squidoo, etc., and if you
have the right content on these pages you will rank very
high for product-related keywords by launch date. The key
is to get your pages up early, post often, and then get
them noticed by the search engines. Product owners will
often provide you with tons of just the right content!
Another reason that you want to find out about affiliate
product launches early is that it gives you more time to
prepare a bonus to offer purchasers of those product. It’s
no secret that the people who sell the most of a product
during many launches are the ones who offers the most
enticing bonuses. Since the basic product is the same no
matter who the customer purchases from, that only makes
sense. The bonus is what keeps the product that you’re
marketing from being just a commodity.
Often, there are numerous products being launched at
the same time. Since you can only effectively promote one
product at a time, knowing what product launches are coming
up allows you to focus on the one most appropriate for your
customers. It’s very disheartening to plan for promoting
a specific product, and then to discover on launch day
that there is a product more suitable for your customers
being launched on the same day.
When you promote any product, you really should plan out
a complete promotional campaign. That is, you should flow
out how and when you are going to do multiple promotions.
Those promotions could include emails, interviews,
articles, press releases, and perhaps even videos. You
can’t flow out these promotions unless you find out
about the product launch early enough. Ideally, you plan a
protracted campaign - one where you will continue to make
sales even after the big launch is over.
Finally, you need to find out about product launches early
because you need to allow sufficient time to actually get
a review copy of the product, and to go through it with a
fine-toothed comb. You absolutely should not promote any
product that you haven’t actually gone through, and with
some of the more substantial products, that could take
a week or more.
Those are just a few of the reasons that you really do
want to stay informed on what new product launches are
coming up in your niche. If you only learn of an
impending product launch a few days, or even a week before
it happens, you are so behind. Especially for great
search engine positioning, there are things that you
need to do at least a month in advance.
Decide today that you’re going to keep up with all of
the product launches in your industry, and market a lot
smarter.

Prepare your Product Launches with Social Media
Posted By: JoelComm.com on October 2, 2009 at 10:00 amI've had a ton of different business ideas. At the time I dreamt them up, they all looked like winners.
It didn't always pan out that way. There have been a number of business ventures that I've started only to see them fizzle and die.
It's just a part of business. No one ever goes through life without making a mistake.

Not many blog posts this week because at the end of each quarter I spend time reviewing exactly what has been working and what has not. Taking the time to do this allows me to continue to improve what I am doing.

Old School, Evergreen – Why should you care
Posted By: Mike Paetzold on September 16, 2009 at 8:27 amProduce and Promote – There are two things that run through every A Team Call I have attended with Marlon Sanders.
Marlon teaches “Old School” marketing and it is one of the reasons that I strongly recommend quite a few of his products. Taking the time to create a product that is “Evergreen” or here for the long term is the key to being able to trade products for dollars instead of time for dollars.
Marlon will be releasing a new product today and for those that want to adopt product for dollars instead of time for dollars as their philosophy this will be a definite value. It will launch at 11 am est.
Now the key as with all products will be to apply it and Marlon will definitely motivate you to do just that.
You create products and promote them hard. In other words, you create products and sell them. This is the ONLY way out of the trap of trading time for dollars. Here is what Marlon is talking about.
In Only 4 Weeks, You’ll Transform From Being a Consumer of Products To a Producer and a Promoter Of Your Own $27 Product — While Stacking Money In The Bank — Never To Be The Same Again, Never To Be a “Consumer Only” Again,
Never To See Life, Business or Your Future The Same Again … and That’s NOT Even The Best Part…Marlon Sanders is conducting a 4-week “white board” class to help you break through in creating and promoting your OWN info products.
I call it Secrets of Becoming a Producer and a Promoter of Products, Instead of a Consumer Only.
Until now, there have been obstacles standing in your way…
* Expensive software with complicated learning curves
* Not knowing exactly what to do or how to do it
* Not having ideas on how to write your sales letter
* Lack of confidence
* No accountability for following through
* Wasting hours and hours learning methods that “go bad” only a few months later
* Working your tail off trying to get Google love then getting “slapped” to Hades in a hand basket
* Joining very high priced coaching programs only to end up months later STILL not having your own product to sell
Check out Produce – Promote
and start trading products for dollars instead of time for dollars. I have.

Ordinarily, I blog for Entrepreneur about news of interest to small business owners--that is, news other sources have reported. But today I want to report some news I've found on my own, over many years of reporting on this sector. If you've ever wanted to get your company noticed by the media, this news should be of interest.Small business, your website sucks. And I'll give you five reasons why.
I usually link to examples of what I'm talking about, but so as not to embarrass any particular small business, this time I'm just going to say...you know who you are out there.
1. Your contact information is not visible on your home page. I wish I had a dime for every small business site I've visited where I not only could not see a phone number or address on the home page--where it belongs--but I could not even see an obvious "contact us" tab. I know--you're trying to seem cosmopolitan, global, mysterious, you're everywhere...or that's what you think this is accomplishing. But it's really just making you look amateurish.
I want to know what city you are based in, and I want to know right away. I need to know what time zone you're in so I know if now's a good time to call you. Or I have a story where I need sources from various parts of the country, and I want to know if you're in one the places I need. But I can't find out. Do you have a business death wish, that you're making it hard for people to get in touch?
Ideally, your contact info, or at worst contact link, should be visible right at the top of your web page, without my even having to scroll down. As opposed to being in Times Roman eight-point at the bottom of your home page, in pale gray type, as it seems to be on so many of the small business sites that do manage to get their contact info onto the home page at all.
Fixing this would help customers as well as reporters, hmmm?
2. You only offer me a fill-in email form. I have a bulletin for everybody who's got these e-mail forms on their contact page: Nobody wants to fill them out. They feel anonymous and weird--I don't know who, if anyone, will be getting this message. I'd love to see stats for the percentage of people who bail on your site after being confronted with one of those forms. If you are in love with your form because it captures data straight into your CRM system for you, or whatever other reason you might have, then at least list your email and give me the option of clicking a link.
3. You have no phone number. That's right, your contact page doesn't have an address, and it often doesn't have a phone number, either. Just that fill-in form. More of the awe and mystery of your pseudo-globalness, or so you think. Reality: This makes me think your company is likely two guys (or girls) sharing a laptop in one of their bedrooms.
4. Your 'About Us' page doesn't tell when your company was founded, or by whom. This is an epidemic lately. About us pages sound like this now: "Faux Global is dedicated to giving customers the most amazing widget possible." Paragraphs and paragraphs of vague junk like that. The company might have been founded by a former child star and have $90 million in sales, but I'll never know.
Reporters are looking for great stories to tell. This is the page where I'm hoping to learn about your story--who's behind this and how they got this puppy off the ground.
5. Your 'News' or 'Press' page has no media contacts. That's right--you've got a page of press releases, a page of clips from media you've been in, but nowhere does it say who I should contact if I want to talk to you. Combine this one with no phone number and that email form, and odds are, if I'm on any kind of deadline, we're not going to connect in time to include you in my story.
At some point, a reporter will probably look at your website. Will they find your story there, and find it easy to get in touch?

Conflicting Reports on Social Networking for Business
Posted By: Mikal Belicove on October 8, 2009 at 7:34 pm
Time to muddy the waters a bit. Three new reports surfaced this week, each offering a different point of view on how business owners and executives value social networking for business. If you're considering adding social media to your marketing mix, you may find this interesting. If you're already sold--or feel like you were sold down the river--on the benefits of social networking for business, this applies to you as well.First up, there's the "2009 Tribalization of Business Survey," which evaluated the perceived potential of online communities and identifies how businesses both large and small believe they may better leverage them. According to the survey, conducted by Deloitte, Beeline Labs and the Society for New Communications Research, 94 percent of respondents indicated that they plan to maintain or increase investment in their online community activities, while six percent plan to decrease theirs. However, the survey points out, while businesses are effectively using social media platforms and tools to engage with customers, partners and employees for brand discussions and idea generation, organizations admittedly struggle with harnessing social media's full potential. Of the 400 or so companies surveyed, the majority shared that increasing word-of-mouth, customer loyalty, and brand awareness are the top business objectives of their social networking activities, followed by idea generation from listening in, and improved customer support by engaging.
Next up is a Citibank Small Business survey that Reuters reported on, which says 75 percent of small businesses (100 employees or fewer) have not found social networking sites or micro-blogging platforms like Facebook and Twitter to be of any help whatsoever in generating qualified leads or expanding business in the last 12 months. The survey, which was conducted in late August among 500 small business executives from across the United States, also revealed that 86 percent of small business executives had not used social networking platforms or services themselves for information gathering or business advice, but failed to address whether those executives own employees did so or not.
Finally, there's the PRWeek/MS&L Social Media Survey, which polled 200 or so chief marketing officers, vice presidents of marketing and marketing directors about their companies use and perceptions of social media. According to this survey, 70 percent of businesses do not make any changes to their products or services based on the customer feedback they observe or receive through their own participation in social media channels, even though managing and monitoring customer feedback is among the most common business uses of social media for these same survey participants!
Care to weigh in? Is your business actively pursuing leads, sales, insight, competitive intelligence, brand positioning, or more in and around the social web? If so, do any of these survey results resonate with you and your colleagues, and what role has having a strategy and plan--as opposed to just jumping in with both feet--played in your experience with social networking for business?
